We often receive calls from customers saying they have an old appliance they are ready to replace and want to know which brand we recommend? Old appliance replacement often brings with it questions such as this. Unfortunately, this is a tough question to answer for a couple of reasons. One, I don’t want to recommend something that they may have problems with and then feel bad that I recommended it to them and two, quite honestly, there is no brand that we don’t see failures on.
What I do tell customers is what brands to stay away from. We have seen in recent years, Korean built models come on the market. While these models look nice and fancy to the consumer, we have found the mechanical aspects of the units to be very shoddy and poorly constructed. We have found these units to have failures very early in their service life. The brands I am talking about are: LG, Samsung and now Kenmore. Kenmore used to be built by Whirlpool but Sears dissolved that relationship several years ago and now Kenmore units are built by LG. For some people this may or may not affect their decision regarding old appliance replacement and what brands they are considering.
Old Appliance Replacement
Through our experience repairing these units we have found freon leaks, split dryer drums, mystery frost problems and so many issues that just shouldn’t be happening to units that are just out of warranty or for that matter just a few years old.
Now I am not saying if you purchased an American made product you will not have any problems with your unit. The appliances now a days are just not built like the ones 20-30 years ago. They are not made to last like the ones our parent and grandparent had. What I am saying is that your odds of a more reliable performing unit are greater if you do. This comes from our experience working on these machines on a daily basis.
